DHS Prize Winners Announced in $195K Challenge To Counter Extreme Temperatures
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that UF startup and Accelerate resident Micro Nano Technologies, as one of their winners in the Cooling Solutions Challenge prize competition. The winners were each awarded funding, which totaled $195,000, for their innovative and creative ideas that sought climate-friendly cooling solutions to protect people in extreme heat conditions.

UF Accelerate client Canaery, thinks it can read the neurons firing in a dog’s olfactory bulb in real-time and, with the help of machine learning, turn the animal into a detection device able to suss out a vast range of molecules, all without the animal having to be specially trained. “This does for scent what machine vision did for sight,” says Gabriel Lavella, Canaery’s founder and chief executive officer.

Zomedica Corp., a veterinary health company offering diagnostic and therapeutic products for companion animals, announced that it has purchased a $1.0 million convertible note from UF startup Structured Monitoring Products, Inc. (SMP), makers of the VetGuardianTM wireless remote pet monitoring platform, and in connection therewith has acquired the option to act as a sales agent for SMP's platform. Under the terms of the agreement, Zomedica will also have the option to acquire the VetGuardian product line for use in Animal Health.
