Event Details

Bobby Newman is the 3rd generation owner and Executive VP of the J.C. Newman Cigar Company, the oldest family owned cigar company in the US – founded in May 1895!

The company was founded in Cleveland by Julius Caeser Newman with a $50 loan which he used to buy tobacco and he received his first order of 500 cigars from the family grocer. By 1916, the company was thriving and had 700 employees. In 1954, the company moved down to Tampa, taking all of their machinery down from Cleveland (which they still use to this day), in order to be closer to the primary source for Tobacco (Cuba) and to manufacture premium cigars.

“We have gone through two World Wars, the Great Depression, the Cuban trade embargo, smoking bans, excessive taxation and competition from low-wage countries” -Eric Newman (Bobby’s brother; in an interview in 2014)

May 2020 marks the company’s 125th year anniversary month and Bobby will talk about why he believes they’re the only family owned cigar company in the US still standing, out of over 4,000 that existed in 1895. He will dive into the numerous challenges they’ve had to overcome and then he will go into detail about some of their premium, hand-rolled cigars.
