UF Listed Among the World’s Most Innovative Universities
The World’s Most Innovative Universities is a list that identifies and ranks the educational institutions doing the most to advance science, invent new technologies and power new markets and industries. The University of Florida ranked No. 92 as a result of the number of patents filed and granted between 2012 and 2017.
An example of the advancement in innovation is the research led by scientists at the University of Florida’s McKnight Brain Institute. The team has pioneered an automated diagnostic test for Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s can be difficult to diagnose in its early stages because the symptoms overlap with many other disorders. But the UF team found that they could use magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners to identify biomarkers for the disease in the brain. The discovery could help reduce the number of misdiagnoses and improve outcomes for patients who are diagnosed early.
Overall, UF researchers received a record of $838 million in research awards during the 2018 fiscal year.
