300+ Startups Launched by Tech Licensing

As of July 2026, UF Innovate | Tech Licensing has helped start 344 biomedical and technology companies based on university research. Of 231 active startups founded on UF research, 60 percent (139 companies) are in Florida; 29 percent (66 companies) are in Alachua County. This is a testament to the quality of the research, the fact that they are unique, well-protected innovations, and that experienced, credible entrepreneurs are attracted by the possibilities to leverage this work for commercial success.

UF startup and UF Innovate | Sid Martin Biotech alum Banyan Biomarkers announced that it has nonexclusively licensed its proprietary blood biomarkers of traumatic brain injury (TBI) to Abbott.

The biomarkers — ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase-L1 and glial fibrillary acidic protein — can be detected in blood soon after a brain injury. They are the basis of San Diego-based Banyan’s Brain Trauma Indicator, which received marketing authorization from the US Food and
Drug Administration in early 2018.

Arm Acquires UF Startup Chaologix for Security Reasons (2018)
Processor IP licensor ARM Ltd. (Cambridge, England) has acquired UF startup ChaoLogix Inc. for an undisclosed sum of money and folded the company into its security operations. ChaoLogix had spent more than a decade developing logic gates that harness the chaos that stems from non-linear physical behavior. Back in 2010, the company was using non-linear physics to create a single circuit that could generate all possible fundamental logic gate outputs, the so-called “chaogate.” At the time the company said the development would have particular significance for data security applications.

Sinmat

Develops products via planarization-enabled technologies used in semiconductor manufacturing for computer chips, solid state lighting, and power devices. Sinmat was acquired by Entegris in 2020.

Entegris Acquires UF Startup Sinmat (January 2020)

Entegris, a specialty chemicals and materials company, has acquired UF startup Sinmat, a chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) slurry manufacturer, based in Gainesville, FL.

Sinmat designs and produces CMP slurries used for polishing ultra-hard surface materials, including SiC and GaN.

“Joining Entegris provides us a great opportunity to increase the value we deliver to our customers. The combined technical expertise, global infrastructure, scale, and operational resources will allow us to stay highly focused on product innovation and expand our global reach,” said Rajiv Singh, CEO of Sinmat.

Myriant

Manufacturing and selling high-value chemicals made from renewable, sustainable feedstocks. Myriant changed its name to GC Innovation America in 2018. PTT Global Chemical acquired In 2011, In 2018, Myriant changed its name to GC Innovation to reflect the new innovation vision for PTT Global Chemicals in North America. The company continues to offer the same performance bio-chemicals and bio-plastics and has expanded its scope to encompass technology scouting and corporate venture capital activities as well as bio-catalyst R&D.
