The Consumer Reports, has announced the Microplastic Detection Challenge and is seeking proposals for scientifically grounded ideas in simple, low-cost methods of detecting microplastics in food that can be transformed into at-home tests. The goal is to empower consumers with fast, affordable tools to assess microplastic contamination in everyday food products.
The competition is looking for solutions applicable to a wide variety of food types, including liquids, semi-solids, and solids, that can detect microplastics of at least 5–10 micrometers in size at concentrations of 500 particles per liter or lower. The proposed methods should produce results in less than 2 hours and cost no more than $15 per test, with the potential for commercialization within 1–2 years.
There will be up to three winners selected with $5K cash prize for first place. Submissions are due by May 18, 2025, at 6:00 AM EST. For more information about this opportunity, click here.
