UF Brain Institute Receives $1 Million for Stroke Research Project

The University of Florida’s McKnight Brain Institute received $1 million to support a stroke research project. The funds are part of UF President Ben Sasse’s $10.9 million strategic funding initiative aimed at boosting the university’s position as a leader in critical research.

Researchers at the McKnight Brain Institute will use the funding to launch a new project that utilizes artificial intelligence to improve stroke treatments. UF Health neurosurgeon and chair of the UF College of Medicine Dr. Brian Hoh will lead the project.

“We are thrilled that President Sasse has given us this opportunity and the resources to transform stroke research and care for the future,” Hoh said. “As the flagship university in the state, where stroke is particularly prevalent among Florida’s aging population, the University of Florida is uniquely positioned to lead the nation in stroke research.”

According to the institute, strokes are the fifth leading cause of death and the No. 1 cause of disability in the United States.
