Third International Kratom Symposium Draws Experts From Across the Globe

Faculty from the University of Florida joined kratom scientists from around the world the Third International Kratom Symposium held in Orlando from Feb. 14-15. Hosted by the UF College of Pharmacy, the symposium featured botanists, chemists, pharmacologists, and public health experts as they exchanged ideas and discussed the most pressing issues concerning kratom’s use internationally and in the West.

Oliver Grundmann, Ph.D., professor of medicinal chemistry and co-director of the symposium, said this event provides a unique opportunity to tackle the challenges around research and regulation of kratom.

“It’s impressive to have so many esteemed kratom scientists together in one location sharing research and learning from each other,” said Grundmann. “With the world’s growing curiosity and intrigue about kratom, scientists play a pivotal role in understanding its medical potential and shaping its future trajectory as a commercial entity.”

The event was also attended by regulators and members of the kratom industry to ensure the symposium was as diverse as possible.

Christopher McCurdy, Ph.D., professor of medicinal chemistry and co-director of the symposium thanked attendees for coming and discussing more about this changing field.

“We are grateful for those kratom vendors who stepped forward to sponsor this meeting, so the kratom scientific community could gather together and have meaningful discussions around advancing kratom research.”
