Local Crowdfunding Company Announces New Services to Bridge the Justice Gap
UF Innovate | The Hub resident client Personal Justice, a nonprofit fundraising & digital marketing consultancy firm, has announced the launch of its new platform and fundraising service for public interest lawyers and social justice advocates.
The justice gap is the unmet demand for legal services by low-and middle-income individuals and families. According to a study by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, 75 percent of county-funded public defender offices have attorney workloads that exceed nationally-recognized maximum workload standards. And, according to the Legal Services Corporation’s 2017 Justice Gap Report, 85 percent of legal problems that are brought to civil legal aid providers cannot be fully addressed due to a lack of available resources.
“Despite the overwhelmingly positive return produced by investing in legal services for low-income Americans, government funding remains grossly inadequate,” says Henry Perlstein, founder and executive director. “Through crowdfunding, individuals and communities have the power to pick up the slack. Together, we can make access to justice a universal right and not just a privilege for the wealthy. Our mission is to help advocates working in the trenches grow their operations through support from those of us on the sidelines.”
