The NIH Data Sharing Index (S-index) Challenge led by the National Eye Institute (NEI), seeks to promote data sharing by incentivizing the development of a metric—the “S-index”—that quantifies how effectively researchers share scientific data. The challenge emphasizes FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles, frequency of reuse, and contribution to downstream research with a total prize pool of $1,000,000 USD.
This opportunity is aimed at the general public, particularly researchers, data scientists, informaticians, and healthcare professionals interested in advancing open science. The Challenge involves two phases: In Phase 1, participants submit proof-of-concept proposals, from which up to six finalists will be selected to move to Phase 2, where finalists will refine and expand their proposals, competing for grand prizes.
Mandatory registration to declare intent to participate is due by April 11, 2025. Phase 1 submissions open on April 21, 2025 and are due by June 2, 2025. For more information, check out the challenge website here.
