The Electronics Scrap Recycling Advancement Prize (E-SCRAP) hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office (AMMTO) is accepting applications. This competition aims to drive innovative solutions that reduce costs and environmental impacts associated with recovering critical materials from electronic scrap (e-scrap), which includes discarded electronics like mobile phones, home appliances, and medical or office equipment.
The competition is structured in multiple phases. Currently, Phase 2 – Prototype is open to participants, there is no requirement to have participated in Phase 1. In Phase 2, competitors develop prototypes and generate data to improve technoeconomic strategies and lifecycle impacts in collaboration with recycling partners. Winners of this phase will receive $150,000 in cash and $120,000 in national laboratory analysis support.
Phase 3, the Demonstrate phase, will focus on scaling and implementing innovations, with winners receiving up to $600,000 in cash.
