UF Accelerate Alumni RTI Surgical Acquires Cook Biotech
UF Innovate | Accelerate alumni company RTI Surgical, a surgical implant company, has acquired Cook Biotech, a life sciences company based in West Lafayette, Indiana. The company is part of Cook Group, a diverse company employing 12,000 people around the world.
RTI Surgical specializes in allograft tissue processing and sterilization, innovation, regulatory know-how, and reliable manufacturing methods. The company will be combining this with Cook's cutting-edge devices that convert porcine tissue into xenograft biomaterial in order to create the best care for patients.
Staying One Step Ahead of the Criminals
UF researcher Read Hayes, a scientist in the University of Florida’s Wertheim College of Engineering FLEX (Florida Engineering Experiment Station), is working on curbing retail theft. Hayes, alongside UF researchers, blend technology -- including artificial intelligence -- with social science to improve retail security and deter theft, fraud and violence at the UF SaferPlaces Lab and the Loss Prevention Research Council.
University of Florida To Launch Space Mission Institute With $2.5 Million in Strategic Funding
Faculty at the University of Florida are joining forces to form the UF Space Mission Institute, with $2.5 million in funding from UF President Ben Sasse. The Institute will be managed by UF Research and will be a hub in which scientists and scholars from across UF can collaborate, conduct research, and innovate.
The institute will work to enhance existing relationships with Space Florida and the Space Life Sciences Laboratory at the Kennedy Space Center, and seek new partnerships with the International Space Station National Laboratory. The institute will also work to leverage UF’s proximity to the growing commercial space ecosystem in Florida. Throughout the next five years, the total economic impact of the commercial space industry in Florida is expected to be more than $5.3 billion.
New Study Findings Could Be Key to Early Detection, Prognosis Prediction in Sepsis
A new study by seven major university medical centers, led by the University of Florida, has identified a way to predict within four days of admission whether a septic patient is at an increased risk of dying. These findings will allow patients to be given the proper care sooner, and allows health care professionals to monitor their immune suppression during care.
