UF/IFAS Scientists Address Food Security in the Caribbean

Jehangir 'Jango' Bhadha, associate professor of soil, water, and ecosystem sciences at the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS), recently led a team of faculty during a three-day training program in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to address the challenges of excess and lack of nutrients used for agricultural production.

Oragenics, Inc. Preparing for Phase II Clinical Trials To Treat Concussion

UF Innovate | Accelerate Sid Martin graduate company Oragenics announced the approval of Phase II clinical trials for their novel drug-device aimed at treating mild Traumatic Brain Injury, or concussion. The drug is delivered to patients as a powder through the nose, and Phase I studies showed the drug to be safe and well-tolerated. In animal testing, the drug improved behavioral outcomes including memory and motor performance in subjects with brain injuries.

Creating the Molecules of Life with HiPerGator

The University of Florida's HiPerGator, the most powerful supercomputer in higher education, is transforming the world of molecular research. Jinze Xue, a Ph.D. student in the Roitberg Computational Chemistry Group, recently conducted a large-scale early Earth molecular dynamics experiment using HiPerGator. The experiment utilized over 1,000 A100 GPUs on 22 million atoms to discover how complex molecules can form from the basic building blocks of life and to make the process automatic through large-scale computer simulations.

University of Florida Researchers Unlock New Frontiers in Brain Tumor Treatments

Researchers at the University of Florida's are making breakthroughs in the treatment of malignant brain tumors. Duane Mitchell, M.D., Ph.D., co-directs the teams conducting this research at the Preston A. Well Jr. Center for Brain Tumor Therapy at UF Health. Over the past ten years, the center has received FDA approval on 12 therapeutics and launched 13 novel immunotherapy clinical trials.

UF Accelerate Alumni RTI Surgical Completes Acquisition of Cook Biotech

UF Innovate | Accelerate alumni company RTI Surgical, a surgical implant company, has finalized its acquisition of Cook Biotech, a life sciences company based in West Lafayette, Indiana. The company is now the only regenerative medicine company with a portfolio of both allograft and xenograft biomaterials available at scale.

SpaceX Launches UF\IFAS Microbiology Experiment to ISS

University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Associate Professor Kelly Rice recently saw her experiment launch to the International Space Station during SpaceX's recent NG-20 mission. The aim of the experiment is to better understand Staph infections in a microgravity environment, and how its affects can be exacerbated in close quarter environments like the ISS.

Venture 53, an industry-focused transportation and logistics fund, recently announced their investment in Optym, a trailblazer in optimization solutions for the transportation industry. Founded in 2000 by UF Professor Emeritus Ravi Ahuja, Optym serves railroads, airlines, and truck carriers to improve efficiency and optimization through AI.

UF/IFAS Scientists Join Together To Promote Compost Standards, Practices in Florida

The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) is seeking alternatives to encourage Floridians to compost common waste like food items, grass clippings, and more. This effort, aimed at reducing demand on landfills, will see UF/IFAS personnel partner with industry professionals and organizations to minimize environmental impact and encourage economic development.
