University of Florida researchers are developing mathematical optimization frameworks to identify biofuel production pathways that can be created more cost-effectively and sustainably than current methods.

Shalom Iboh, a third-year PhD candidate at the Sustainable Process Design Laboratory at the University of Florida, said she is developing frameworks using mathematical optimization models to identify biofuel production pathways and products that can be produced more cost-effectively and sustainably.

Manuel Marmol, Gathr

In this week’s Tech Tuesday, UF Innovate features a UF student-founded startup that developed an app to connect students with organizations, making it easier for college students to get involved on campus.

“My name is Manny. I’m a student at the University of Florida. I’m a senior this upcoming semester, and I’m the co-founder and CEO of Gathr,” said Manuel Marmol, CEO of Gathr.

Dr. Joshua Moon, Water Filteration

In this week’s Tech Tuesday, UF Innovate spotlights Dr. Joshua Moon and his University of Florida lab, which is developing new technologies to eliminate forever chemicals from water.

“What if there are better ways to clean your water? Let’s learn more. Josh Moon, tell us a little bit more about who you are and what you do,” said Elora Duong, host of UF Innovate.

“Yeah, so I’m an assistant professor of chemical engineering here at [the] University of Florida, and my lab is essentially trying to create new technologies to be able to remove per- and perfluoroalkyl substances from water. They’re also known as PFAS or sometimes called forever chemicals,” said Dr. Joshua Moon, assistant professor at UF’s Department of Chemical Engineering.

In this week’s Tech Tuesday, UF Innovate spotlights the Florida Semiconductor Institute (FSI), a statewide organization dedicated to advancing research, education, and workforce development in Florida’s semiconductor industry.

“The Florida Semiconductor Institute has a plan to create 10,000-plus jobs. Let’s learn how. Dr. Arnold, tell us about who you are and what you do,” said Elora Duong, host of UF Innovate.

“Yeah, I’m first a professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering, but I get the honor and privilege to lead our Florida Semiconductor Institute. So, the Florida Semiconductor Institute, or FSI, is a statewide entity that’s trying to coordinate our education programs, our university systems, research and development, and ultimately the industry, to create more jobs in the state for Floridians,” said Dr. David Arnold, professor at the UF Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Statewide Organization Aims To Create More Than 10,000 Jobs Within Florida’s Semiconductor Industry.

In this week’s Tech Tuesday, UF Innovate’s host Bethany Gaffey introduces Madison Maish from the UF Swamp Launch Rocket Team. This student design team designs, manufactures, and launches high-powered rockets, showcasing their technical abilities and exploring engineering applications through competitions.

“Ever wondered what it takes to build a rocket? We’re here with the UF Swamp Launch Rocket Team to learn more. Madison, tell us more about who you are and what your club does,” said Gaffey.

In this week’s Tech Tuesday, our host Bethany Gaffey introduces Dr. Jennifer Mulligan from the UF Health Smell Disorders Clinic. Her lab has developed a mucosal anti-inflammatory gel made from amino acids to treat inflammation in the ear, nose, and throat without the use of steroids.

“What if there was a way to treat inflammation without the use of steroids? We’re here at UF Health’s Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic at The Oaks Mall to learn more. Dr. Mulligan, tell us more about who you are and what you do” said Gaffey.

In this week’s Tech Tuesday, UF Innovate’s host Bethany Gaffey speaks with Aladdin Alwisy, an assistant professor at Rinker School of Construction and the director of Smart IDC Lab.

“In a world of rising costs, low inventory, and intense natural disasters, imagine a robot that can lend a helping hand to construction. We’re here with UF’s College of Design Construction and Planning to learn more.”

In this week’s Tech Tuesday, UF Innovate’s host Bethany Gaffey introduces Damian Blanco from the UF Steel Bridge team. This student-led group designs and constructs competition bridges, focusing on speed, strength, and efficiency.

“Think you can build a bridge in five minutes? We’re here with the UF Steel Bridge team to learn more Damian, tell us about who you are and what you do at Steel Bridge?” asked Gaffey.

“I am a fourth-year civil engineering major. I’m currently the 2024-2025 project manager at Steel Bridge. My job this year is to manage a project, make sure that we run on time and keep everything moving smoothly,” said Damian Blanco, project manager at UF Steel Bridge.

In this week’s Tech Tuesday, UF Innovate’s host Bethany Gaffey introduces Dr. Elias Sayour as the 2024 Innovator of the Year. Dr. Sayour was recognized for his groundbreaking work in developing unique cancer therapies, which have the potential to revolutionize cancer treatment and prevention.

“Innovator of the Year, a prestigious award by the University of Florida, recognizing remarkable work in science and technology. We’re here with Dr. Elias Sayour to learn more. Elias, thank you for joining us,” said Gaffey.

“Thank you for having me,” said Dr. Elias Sayour, associate professor of neurosurgery and pediatrics at the University of Florida.
