In 2012, inspired by a desire to recreate the amazing locations Amir Rubin and his wife Katie had visited, he was hit by the vision to 3D map the world. With funds from his personal savings earned from consulting gigs and proceeds from the exit from Prioria Robotics, his first company, UF startup Paracosm, a cloud-based software company that leverages 3D mapping technology to unleash the digital world into reality, launched in January 2013.

UF startup Paracosm, a cloud-based software company that leverages 3D mapping technology to unleash the digital world into reality, has announced a partnership with Geo-Plus to offer the VisionLiDAR point cloud processing software in a bundle with the PX-80 handheld scanner. Joining forces means both companies now offer an end-to-end 3D mapping workflow for a variety of applications.

“We are delighted to offer this software to our PX-80 customers,” says Amir Rubin, Paracosm president. “The versatile VisionLiDAR works as a standard point cloud processing tool – a critical need in many workflows – but also includes comprehensive functionality for specific applications like topography generation, city assets extraction, and tree extraction. It allows us to offer a truly complete 3D mapping solution to meet the needs of demanding users in surveying and other industries.”

Thomas J. Elmore, a professional landscape designer, needed 3D data capture sensor and visualization software that would satisfy his professional needs. Part of his solution is UF startup Paracosm’s PX-80. Here is his story:

Thomas J. Elmore began his formal education by earning an Associates degree from Colombia-Greene Community College, while living in my hometown of Catskill, NY. As they say, it’s a small world. After going on to earn his BS and MS in Landscape Architecture and 3D Historic Preservation, Thomas J. Elmore began Elmore Design Collaborative, LLC, Historical Landscape Architecture, in 1999.

For the next nineteen years, Tom honed his unique combination of professional interests as a sole practitioner based in Suffield, CT using traditional 2D surveying tools and techniques, including cameras and tape measures.

UF startup Paracosm has been at the forefront of SLAM-based 3D-mapping since the company’s founding in 2013. In the ensuing years, they’ve racked up an impressive resume: helping Google develop the dense 3D-mapping engine on the Project Tango smartphone, receiving iRobot’s first corporate VC investment, and most recently being acquired by spatial computing powerhouse Occipital (makers of the Structure Sensor).

The company’s first product was a low-cost structured-light
3D-scanner designed for capturing complex indoor spaces. While this
system was initially targeted to visual effects creators and augmented
reality developers, it quickly (and unexpectedly!) became a hit with
mechanical, electrical, and plumbing contractors. As its popularity grew
with geospatial (GIS), architecture/engineering/construction (AEC)
professionals, Paracosm saw a need for a more robust handheld system
that could capture much larger environments and operate both indoors and
outdoors.

UF startup Paracosm’s PX-80 handheld lidar scanner has come a long since the company introduced it to the market early last year. The company says the device has been in high demand not only in architecture engineering & construction, but also in a number of industries, with users capturing everything from dense Japanese forests to comprehensive site surveys of US Army bases.

Contributing to this popularity, no doubt, are the impressive specs that the PX-80 offers for a handheld device. It boasts 360° lidar capture at an accuracy of ±2-3 cm, with 300,000 points per second, and at ranges up to 100 m. On top, you’ll find an HD camera that captures up to 50fps with a 360° by 250° field of view. For easy control and visual feedback on progress, the device includes a scanning app on an iPad mini which mounts on the handle.
