The University of Florida has selected 20 research projects in artificial intelligence for accelerated development using the university’s HiPerGator supercomputer.

The program is a collaboration between UF Research, UF Research Computing and NVIDIA, which together are providing $2.4 million in seed funding and in-kind computer time and consulting for students, post-docs and faculty working on specific projects.

“This program is to help faculty who need access to hundreds of GPUs to perform analysis on billions of pieces of data,” said David Norton, UF’s vice president for research. “These projects are expected to open up whole new avenues of artificial intelligence research and position the researchers to pursue other large external grants.”

The University of Florida’s research enterprise achieved a major milestone this year when, for the first time, annual research spending surpassed $1 billion.

There are only about 15 public universities in the U.S. that have achieved this mark — an accomplishment that highlights not only the excellence of UF’s faculty, staff, and students but also the commitment of the institution to pursue meaningful research that impacts the state, nation, and world.

While $1 billion a year in research is a remarkable feat, it is the impact of our research in advancing knowledge, creating new technologies, and powering Florida’s economy that really counts.

University of Florida faculty surpassed $1 billion in research spending for the first time in 2022, developing treatments for diseases, new agricultural products, engineering solutions and countless other advancements.

With $1.076 billion in research expenditures, UF joins an exclusive group of about 15 public universities around the country to surpass $1 billion, including the University of Michigan, UCLA and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

UF Vice President for Research David Norton praised the faculty and staff for driving the university’s relentless pursuit of new knowledge and discovery through research and scholarship.

“Surpassing the $1 billion research milestone reflects UF’s continued rise as one of the leading research universities in the United States,” Norton said. “But this number represents far more than dollars – it represents the value of these researchers’ remarkable intellect and talent and its impact on our state, our nation and the world.”

The National Science Foundation has recognized a record nine University of Florida faculty members from a wide variety of academic disciplines with 2022 Early Career Development Awards, one of its most prestigious honors.

The award recognizes junior faculty who possess the potential to serve as academic role models in research and education and to lead advances in the mission of their department or organization. The impact of these awards is crucial to both the standing of UF faculty in the academy and their effect as a force multiplier for research funding.

“The CAREER Award is the National Science Foundation’s most prestigious grant in support of early career faculty, reserved for those who show the potential not only to lead their respective fields in discovery, but also to serve as academic role models in research and education,” said UF Vice President for research David Norton. “To have nine UF faculty members honored with CAREER Awards in a single year is testament to the current quality of our faculty across the university and to a promising future for UF research.”
